Colonel Katherine Powell (Helen Mirren) is the commander of an international drone operation in Nairobi. From her command center, she attempts to track down and eliminate terrorists without having to be on site herself. Her US colleague Steve Watts (Aaron Paul) is also not on site, but he guides the weapon to Powell's desired target via remote control. During their investigation, Powell and Watts come across two suspected terrorists who are planning an attack in a house in Kenya that will put numerous people in danger.
At first, the command is clear: take them out! However, when a seemingly innocent girl enters the scene, the people behind the heavy weapons are no longer sure how to proceed. While Powell and Lieutenant General Frank Benson (Alan Rickman) are willing to take the risk, the concerned advisors from politics and the Attorney General's Office suddenly get involved. Within a very short time, the question of life and death threatens to become not only an ethical but also a political fiasco.
“This excellently acted film takes a nuanced look at the dilemmas of drone warfare through a variety of characters involved in the decision-making process. In doing so, it expands from a thrilling political thriller to a moral drama. - Worth seeing” (Lexikon des Internationalen Films)
"Similar to A WAR, viewers are challenged to think about these fundamental questions and take a stand themselves; simply looking away is not an option. How far can we go in the fight for our security? What sacrifices are we willing to make?
But even without this moral component, EYE IN THE SKY is an incredibly exciting thriller that is not diminished by the lack of action or locations – much of the film consists of seated discussions in closed rooms. From the very beginning, viewers are kept on the edge of their seats as they follow the fight against terrorism, because it remains completely unclear what decision will ultimately be made. And also what the consequences of that decision will be." (Oliver Armknecht, on: film-rezensionen.de)
